Duane grew up and attended school in Fargo. He joined the US Navy in 1976 at age 18.
Duane made a career of the navy and spent 28 years serving his country. He served on the USS Ranger, the Constellation, the Enterprise and the Abraham Lincoln quickly rising to Senior Chief. He saw much of the world, spent three years in Japan and fought in the Gulf War, as well as serving during the Iraq War. He received several medals and accommodations during this time. He retired in May 2004.
Duane enjoyed spending time with his family and camping. In 2005 he fulfilled a life dream of working with trains while employed with the BN Railroad. He was a man with a caring heart, who enjoyed life and loved people, the outdoors and his country. He will be missed by many.
He is survived by his wife Julie of Everett, 2 children, Misty and Melissa and one granddaughter; father, Burnell Bjorland of Fargo, ND, as well as brothers and sisters Kathy (David) Koch Burnsville, MN, Beverly (Douglas) Bjorland-Larson of Fargo, ND, Dale (Sue) Bjorland of Greeley, CO, Jerri Lynn (Chris) Gruhl of Fargo, ND, Dennis Bjorland of West Fargo, ND, 13 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents. A family prayer service will be held in Kent, Washington on Feb 1, 2008. Burial will be at Tahoma National Military Cemetery in Kent Washington.
