George Zahariades, 91, a 55-year resident of Yucca Valley, passed away peacefully Feb. 19, 2010, at home with family around him.

He was born June 29, 1918, in Enid, Okla., to Cleo and Kitty Zahariades.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, in 2005.

Mr. Zahariades served in the Army during World War II. He was a past commander of both the American Legion post 469 and the Veterans of Foreign War post 9431.

He was a wonderful father and patient grandfather and bounced many grandchildren on his knee for hours at a time.

George was a skilled carpenter who served as a supervisor on local jobs, including portions of the Hi-Desert Hospital. He and his brother built his home in Yucca Valley in the early 1950s. He built as he could pay in cash with no loans or banks involved.

He was a John Wayne stand-up kind of guy, an avid fisherman, sharp western dresser, guitar player and accomplished ballroom dancer. His trademark was his collection of classy western clothing.

He was preceded in death by several brothers and a sister. He is survived by one brother, Eldon Koneke, and sister-in-law Mary Zahariades, as well as his close and extended family members, which includes children, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Best known locally as Papa, he looked forward to the summer concerts in the park, his Saturday morning breakfasts at the Paradise Café and an occasional gambling trip.

A celebration service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Rose Mortuary in Desert Hot Springs, followed by a gathering in Grandpa/Papa's honor at his house in Yucca Valley.
