Marian was a very good friend of mine and she confided in me a very personal story that happened to her at a very young age.
Now that she is long passed I have kept my confidence long enough.
When Marian was a young teenaged girl she was raped. In those days when a girl was raped, if she became pregnant, which Marian did, she was forced to carry the baby until time to give it birth.
Marian gave birth but the baby was whisked away before she could even see it. She did hear that it was a boy and he had been named "Michael".
A few years later Marian married and was happy until a few months after her wedding she was diagnosed with uterine cancer and she had a full hysterectomy.
All her life she wondered about Michael. She did hear once that he had grown to be a successful doctor somewhere in Florida but she never did search for him.
When Marian passed away, at the age of 89 she was so sad because she did not have one living relative. No sisters, brothers, cousins or children.
Marian hailed from the East Coast, and lived on Long Island, New York until she and her husband moved to California.
Marian's husband was disabled, in a wheel chair and then passed away leaving her all alone.
Marian and I became friends when we met as neighbors. I took a liking to her and found out she worked as a Cook for the Priests at St. Filomena's Catholic church in Carson, CA. She fell in their kitchen and broke her hip. The church turned their back on her and fought giving her any sort of compensation. She did have to sue them in order to get her medical bills paid, and she,of course, won, but the church didn't even offer her a loaf of bread after her dedicated work.
When I found out what the church had done to her I contacted a Catholic friend of mine that attended St. Lawrence in Redondo Beach and shamed the Catholic Church for how they had treated Marian. The Redondo Beach Catholic church was a completely different story. After hearing what I had to say they were very glad to help Marian. They would bring her groceries, did car repairs for her and even re-built a dangerous stairway she had going up to her back door.
I'll never forget Marian - May she rest in God's Holy Peace!
