Alfred Hatch was born on October 14, 1799 in Craven County, North Carolina.
The son of Gen.Durant & Elizabeth Norman Hatch.Grandson of Col.Lemuel & Mary Fonvielle Hatch, who was a delegate to the Fourth Provisional Congress of North Carolina and on April 12th,1776, cast his vote for authorizing the NC Delegate to the 2nd Continental Congress to vote for Independence."Halifax Resolves"

Alfred married Elizabeth Vail Blount on May 8, 1822 at Newbern,Craven County in a ceremony officiated by his brother Rev.Lemuel Durant Hatch.

Alfred & Elizabeth had three boys and three girls together, with all still living by the time of the American Civil War.
The Alfred Hatch family migrated to Alabama in 1840. Alfred Hatch established several large plantations, most notably Arcola Place on land he purchased from his brother who had migrated to Greensboro several years earlier;and Elm Ridge near Greensboro. Hatch owned a total of more than 200 slaves.

Elizabeth Hatch died in 1864 having given birth to 2 more children in Alabama.

Alfred married a second time to Victoria Jones Walker, a widow 32 years old.
They had a daughter Evalina Hatch [Lena] in 1873.

Alfred P. Hatch died on January 30, 1879. He left most of his estate to his second wife Victoria, creating a rift between her and the children of his first wife.

His plantation Arcola Place is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
