OBITUARY OF J. L. CRAVEN

J. L. Craven died at his home in Northbranch, last Friday, May 18, having never recovered from a recent paralytic stroke. He was almost 68 years of age.

Funeral services were held at the Friends church in Northbranch, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. A. Stansbury, assisted by Rev. W. A. Rees, Friends minitser [sic], and interment was made in the cemetery there.

Jacob L. Craven, son of Ashley S. and Huldah Craven, was born in Randolph county, North Carolina, May 25, 1849. He moved with his parents at age 7 years, in a covered wagon from North Carolina to Dallas county, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Hannah E. Hadley, November 15, 1868. To this union were born 10 children—five sons and five daughters; two of the daughters and one son died in childhood.

They were pioneer settlers in this neighborhood in the early settlement of the country, returning after ward to Iowa.

A few years later again returning to Kansas, they settled in Mitchell county. The coming year returned to Northbranch, in 1886, where he resided until his death.

His wife dying in 1908, he was on June 2, 1909 again united in marriage to Elizabeth Hadley, who with his four sons and three daughters by his first wife, still survive him.

He was converted in youth and was a member of Friends church until some 20 years ago he united with the Wesleyan Methodist church by which body he was ordained a minister, remaining faithful in this capacity until death.

He was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father, a friendly and obliging neighbor, an honest upright citizen and an earnest enthusiastic worker in the church. His last days were spent in spiritual victory and died in the triumphs of living faith.
