SHELBYVILLE — Virgil L. Alexander, 80, of Shelbyville, died at 11:28 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2006 in Shelby ville Manor.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Shelbyville, with Father Don Wolford officiating. Visitation one hour before services in the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Pana, Illinois with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Howe & Yockey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Shelbyville.

Mr. Alexander was born on June 23, 1925 in Assumption, Illinois, the son of James and Elizabeth Leach Alexander. He graduated from Pana High School in the Class of 1942. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran of WW II serving from Dec. 4, 1945 to December 3, 1948, where he was a gunner on a bomber. He worked for CIPS in Pana and then was manager in Shelbyville and Watseka before retiring in 1985 after 33 years of service. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus in Shelbyville. He was a former member Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post #81 and the Shelbyville Rotary Club, where he served as chairman of the Rotary Halloween Parade for many years. He was a Boy Scout leader, a Little League Baseball coach and helped start the Aid to Appalachia Program all in Shelbyville. He enjoyed bowling and playing fast pitch softball. He married Lorraine Hilbert on June 30, 1949. She died on December 17, 2004.

Surviving are his sons, Kerry Alexander and wife Anna of Collierville, Tennessee, Dennis Alexander of Neoga and friend Melissa, and Tom Alexander of Mattoon; brother, James Alexander and wife Karen of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; sisters, Trudy Welsh and husband Tom of Clearwater, Florida and Juanita Chipman of Pomeroy, Washington; two grandchildren, Jason Alexander and Whitney Olemsted; and one great grandson, Wil Savvy Camron.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lorraine; and sister, Bernadette Klay.
