It is not clear at this time, what his occupation was, but he was a very wealthy and successful business man. He perhaps was a stockholder and secretary for the Insurance Co of Philadelphia. A William Harper posted a notice in the Philadelphia Inquirer about stocks being posted at $14 a share in Aug of 1851. He signed his name and title of Secretary. Whether this is the same person or not is not known, but since his grandson Thomas Esmonde Jr was also in the insurance business, this is a good possibility.
We do know that in the 1850 census, he has listed that his real estate is valued at $10,000. And in 1860 it is listed as $15,000, with a personal worth of $3,000. Quite a sum in those days.
He married Mary Hutton McMullin on May 24, 1810 in Philadelphia. She was the daughter of John and Mary Hutton McMullin of the same city. They would have 10 children. Their son Thomas Esmonde was also a very successful business man in his life time as well.
It is uncertain whether William was a member of the Masonic Lodge as his son Thomas was, but it is most likely.
