Calvin was the son of John and Lydia (Gemberling) Parks. Calvin enlisted when he was 18 years old as a private in Company "G" of the 147th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Joseph Lumbard's Civil War Diary records the day to day life and battles of Co. "G". Calvin had been a carpenter before the war. He received a gunshot wound to the left hand at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863 and lost a finger. When Cal was shot Jerry Moyer said, "Cal you wounded? to which piece of information Cal replied, "Tell me something I don't know." from the Diary of Joseph Lumbard p75. After the war he married Agnes Ryan whose father was Capt Ryan. They had a son John Ryan Parks 1869-1943 and a daughter, Lillian (Parks) Stacey. On Sept 18, 1879 he and N. P. Jarrett left for Kansas and William H. Gemberling for Ohio, to work for the Delaware Bridge Company. On November 25, 1884 Calvin was fatally injured at Little Rock, Arkansas while engaged in bridge work. He and his wife had 2 children; John Ryan Parks and Lillian (Parks) Stacey. His widow later married another member of Co. "G", James Ulrich.
