"Jesse" Phillips drowns in Beouf River Saturday
Beouf river claimed the life of Raymond L. (Jesse) Phillips, 42, of Goodwill, Saturday about 3 p.m. when he slipped into the current and drowned despite frantic efforts by fishing companions to rescue him.
The tragedy occurred at the first rock pile above the bridge over highway 2, Sheriff W, E. Capers reported. Sheriff's officers recovered the body about 5 p.m. that day.
Funeral services were held from the Forest Corner Church of God Monday at 2 p.m. for the drowning victim. The Rev. James Scroggins officiated and interment was in the Forest Community cemetery under direction of First National Funeral home.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Clarice Phillips; five sons, Ray Phillips, of Oxford, Miss., Merlin Phillips, of Mansfield, Dale, Jesse Lee and Charles Phillips, at home; a brother, Clifton Phares, of Oak Grove; a step - brother, J. E. Morris, of Oak Grove; two sisters, Mrs. Sybil Land, of Shreveport, and Mrs. Truman Castleberry, of Bastrop; and one grandchild.

Sheriff Capers said that Mr. Phillips was fishing at the rock pile with three of his sons and Mr. Morris. The sheriff said Mr. Phillips' hook caught on something in the water and he was working to free it when he lost his balance and fell into the river.
Efforts by. Mr. Morris and the victim's sons to extend lines and poles to him met with failure. "One of the boys went into the river to try to help his - father after he failed to hold - onto a fishing line. The boy couldn't save him," Sheriff Capers commented.
