Most Historians think that 'Magness' were the first white settlers in Arkansas. Morgan was a farmer, Republican and a Methodist; removed to California about 1888.

Morgan Jefferson and twin brother Perry Green Magness joined Confederate States of America at Yellville, Marion Co., Arkansas in June 28, 1862 at age 33 years. Both were captured in Carroll Co., Arkansas on February 14, 1863; sent to Military Prison at St. Louis, Missouri; forwarded to City Point, Virginia for exchange on April 2, 1863.

Morgan Jefferson Magness first married Melvina McClary. They had three children: Martha E. Magness b. 1853, Elzada Belle Magness b. 1855 and Tilford Deaton Magness b. 1856, all born in Marion, Arkansas. Melvina died June 28, 1858.

Morgan then married Julia Ann Greenlee on March 24, 1860. They had eight children.
