Buffalo hunter. Charles H. Billinghurst was known as "Albion's Greatest Hunter." The son of Daniel Billinghurst, a pioneer of Sheridan Township west of Albion, Charles went on two long hunting trips (lasting 3-4 years each) out west from 1876 to 1883, covering numerous states. With a team of other men totalling four persons, he killed approximately 200 deer, 300 buffalo, 50 bears, and some elk and beavers. When Charles returned to Albion, he married Cora Wolcott, and operated a 20-acre melon farm on 27 Mile Road just north of the Tamarack School. He later moved into town and lived at 307 Irwin Avenue. An excellent article about Charles appeared in the July 1942 issue of the AAA Michigan magazine. Another article about Charles written in 1993 appears on the www.albionmich.com web site. Before his death, Charles wrote a series of letters detailing his hunting trips. Those letters were published in serial form in five installments in the magazine "The Black Powder News" (Cody, WY) Winter, 2005 issue #52, through #56 Winter 2006. This included the front cover of the Spring 2006 issue showing the historic photo of Charles with his other three hunting companions.
