George Bertram Thacher grew up on a dairy farm on the Wisconsin - Illinois border. He attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison for two years and had to return to the farm when his father passed. He later sold his interest in the farm to his brother Harry and took a series of jobs such as milk tester, he later worked for the Lake Shore Herald in Lake Geneva. He married in 1940 and went to work as the publication, advertisement, and employee magazine editor with the Wisconsin Power & Light Company in Madison from which he retired in 1965. He was a magician, gardener, and writer.
