Son of Nelson & Sarah A Tubbs Bolen. Married Mary Ann Clark October 7th 1866 in Flora, Clay County, Illinois. Served in the Civil War. Enlisted as Private on December 18th 1861 in Logan County, Ohio. On February 15th 1862 he was Mustered in to the 13th Ohio Battery, Light Artillery at Camp Dennison, Ohio. He fought at the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6th-7th 1862 and then on April 20th 1862 he was transferred to the 14th Ohio Battery. He Mustered out of the service on August 9th 1865 at Camp Dennison, Ohio.
