"Navy Awards Air Medal to S.L. Flier"

Destruction of 12 Japanese airplanes and infliction of heavy damage to enemy shore installations in the Guadalcanal and Rekata bay area have brought to Lieutenant (j.g.) Roy P Gee, 1335 Logan avenue, the navy air medal. This is the second citation for Lieutenant Gee, who was awarded the navy cross in October, 1942, for action in the battle of Midway. He was assigned to flight duty in the famous bombing squadron 8 on the aircraft carrier Hornet, on which he served until it was sunk. Frank Knox, secretary of the navy, acted for President Roosevelt in presenting the award to Lieutenant Gee. The citation reads: "For meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot of a scout bomber airplane during a raid on enemy Japanese forces in the Guadalcanal and Rekata bay area. In spite of heavy antiaircraft fire, Lieutenant Gee pressed home a bold and determined attack which resulted in the destruction of 12 Japanese float seaplanes and enemy shore installations consisting of gasoline dumps, gun emplacements and other shore facilities. His skill and courageous devotion to duty were contributing factors in the accomplishment of an important and hazardous mission." Lieutenant Gee is a son of Mrs Helen Gee of 1335 Logan avenue, Salt Lake City, and visited her after his marriage, Dec 24, 1942, to Miss Buelah Janette Wood at Norfolk, VA. He is now stationed at Miami, Fla., where he will complete training May 19 as a signal officer.
