PHILPOT, Jr., HARRY HARRISON

Harry Philpot Jr. passed away April 4, 2009, in El Cajon at the age of 87.

He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1922 to famous horse race trainer Harry Harrison Philpot and Mae Rainey. His father's brother, Hurst Philpot, was also a famous California horse trainer and both were mentioned in jockey Will Shoemaker's books discussing the influence they both had on his career.

Harry moved to San Diego with his (now deceased) brother Gurney Philpot when he was eight years old. Harry served in World War II in the Western Pacific and received the following medals: American Campaign Medal, Victory Medal WWII, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with the Bronze Service Star Meritorious Unit Award. Harry was honorably discharged in March 1946 at Fort MacArthur California. He earned the Golden Veterans Award for 50 years of service as a Masonic Lodge member and made the rank of Master Mason in March 1954.

After military service, he worked in San Diego for Safeway as a meat cutter and later owned and operated a meat market in San Diego. He loved golfing, lifting weights, the Silver Strand beach and dancing. Harry married Joyce Thomas in November 1960 and would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this year.

Harry was preceded in death by his sons Shawn and Terry.

In addition to his wife Joyce, Harry is survived by his remaining children, Valerie Sorrells (Davie) of Carlsbad, John Philpot (Debra) of San Diego, Mary Dota (Dan) of Santee and nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his niece Penny Philpot and family friend Don McDougal.

A Celebration of his Life will be held Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma - meet at their main office at 9:30 a.m. The family suggests in lieu of flowers to make donations to the American Heart Association.
