1857 married Sabrina Leticia McKinley (d. 1857 Topeka KS), married 1904 Mary Parmer (Stockon, KS); Enlisted in the Union Army 25 May, 1861 with Co. F 17th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry - discharged 22 March, 1863; Organized Co. F 140th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry and re-enlisted as its captain and served until the close of the war.

1866 ordanined a minister, 1872 immigrated to Kansas and on 7 August 1872 settled a homestead 4 miles west of Alton KS.

1892 Elected Secretary of State for the state of Kansas for 1 term.
