Born International Falls, Minnesota, Died Yuma, Arizona.

John Richard Chatburn, a member of the Reno Air Racing Association and a retired Nevada Air National Guard Colonel, passed away on March 20, 2010, at his winter home in Yuma, AZ.

John was born on January 15, 1949, in International Falls, MN to William and Katherine Chatburn. When his father was transferred to Stead Air Force Base (AFB), the family moved to Sparks where John attended Sparks High School graduating in 1967.

He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education from the University of Nevada Reno in 1971. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. While at UNR he met his future wife Andrea Rosaschi and they were married in 1972.

John enlisted in the Air Force in 1971 and was commissioned as an officer later that year. He graduated from Navigator training at Mather AFB and his first assignment was to Fairchild AFB at Spokane, WA as a KC-135 Navigator. His duties included flying air-refueling missions throughout the world.

In 1975, as a 1st Lt., John transferred to the Nevada Air National Guard (NVANG) in Reno, qualifying as a Weapons Systems Officer in the RF-4C, Phantom. He also worked at the Reno Gazette Journal in the circulation department and as an accountant with Wix Lumber Company. John became a full time member of the NVANG and advanced in federal and military positions, serving as a flight instructor and evaluator; and rose to the rank of Colonel as the 152nd Operations Group Commander in 2005. His military service included over 6500 flying hours and participation in the Vietnam, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Southwest Asia conflicts. After 34 years of military service, John retired from the NVANG with distinction on December 31, 2005.

John then volunteered with the Reno Air Racing Association and in 2007 was selected to serve as the Logistics Coordinator. John was responsible for the general maintenance of the RARA hangars and grounds and provided guidance during the event set up and take down.

John Chatburn will be remembered as a great officer having an unparalleled commitment and dedication to his job, with a deep respect for his friends and those with whom he worked and served with. We will miss his ability to tell stories and revel in his own sense of humor.

John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his former wife Andrea Chatburn and by a family of many friends at the Reno Air Racing Association and the Nevada Air National Guard.

A memorial service will be held on April 6, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the Nevada Air National Guard Base, 1776 National Guard Way in Reno, NV. A reception will follow. Interment will occur at the Veterans Cemetery in Fernley, NV at a future date.
