Hershel Dean Black, 79, of Hendersonville, passed away Saturday evening, September 13, 2008 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, after a short battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Jean {Allen} Black; children, Debbie Frank) Jackson, Hendersonville, James Steven (Terri) Black, Seattle, WA, Paul Michael (Dana) Black, Hendersonville; five grandchildren, Ryan Chastain, Ft. Myers, FL, Keela Chastain (Tim) Walters, Fuquay-Varina, NC, Shane Black, Allen Black, Dylan Black, & Evan Black, Seattle, WA; great-grandson, Cohen James Walters, Fuquay-Varina, NC; two step grandchildren, Jonathan Jackson, Hendersonville & Kerri Jackson (Mike) Pelz, their children Jackson, Kaia & Auden Pel, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Allen Dean Black, parents, Lawson & Grace Black, and a brother, Charles A. Black.
He was retired from Olin Matheson in Brevard, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Post No. 5306, the American Legion Post No. 77, past member of the Daybreak Lions Club, and the Hendersonville Rescue Squad. He served our country for two years in the Navy.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Elizabeth House, Pardee Hospital, his Doctors and our angel, Donna Jenkins, for the wonderful, compassionate care that he was given.
