Ida Vander Lende was a woman rich in the things in life that count, a strong work ethic, a true faith in God and above all, an unconditional love for her children, grandchildren and family.

The year was 1920 and things were on the upswing for many in the United States. While the grim visage of World War I lay in the distance, many Americans found prosperity working in the newly developed manufacturing sector. It was in this new sector that Abraham Debruyn of Grand Rapids, Michigan earned his living, working at Klise Manufacturing Co. making decorative wood moulding. Meanwhile, at home, his wife, Clara (Blackport), was a busy homemaker, tending to the needs of their family. On May 18, 1920, the couple delighted in welcoming another new member to their family with the birth of their daughter, Ida. Although Clara was a petite lady in stature (4'11"), she would eventually bear nine Debruyn children.

Having a large family made growing up during the Great Depression very tough. Everyone learned to be very frugal-minded, a virtue Ida used all her life. In fact, later in life if she was presented with a gift she thought was too expensive, she would insist it be taken back. Ida was an exceptional student in school so much so that she skipped a grade. She graduated from Creston High School in 1937. Aside from school, Ida was also passionate about something else - "sweets." She had an intense sweet tooth, which was sustained at her brothers' ice cream and candy store.

Ida was happily married for many years to her handsome husband, Gerritt Vander Lende, and they had five wonderful children: Gary, David, Phillip, Jayne and William. As a homemaker, Ida provided a loving, stable home for her family, and although money was always tight, the children never felt they were poor. They never really had the extra money to go out to eat, and vacations were not possible either, though one year they went to Grand Haven and it rained the entire time. One of the children's most memorable Christmas's was the year they got a homemade tunnel for their train set, something they always treasured.

Ida was the main disciplinarian in the home and the children knew they did not want her to have to repeat something more than once. Ida knew she wouldn't always be around when they got into mischief, so she would pinch the kids under their arm and say "that's for nothing, wait till you do something." Ida was a wonderful cook and every Sunday her family looked forward to her round steak with Dawn fresh mushrooms steak sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, peas, applesauce and Dad's homemade coleslaw. Their favorite dessert was Ida's apple crisp with whipped cream.

A devout Christian, Ida's strong faith was a hallmark of her life. Her commitment to her faith was always evident in the way she led her life and it wasn't unusual to hear her singing hymns while she did housework. The family attended two church services every Sunday, and in the evening, they would rotate homes with other couples and share coffee and a small meal together. After Sunday afternoon naps in the Vander Lende home, everyone was treated to a candy bar; Dad always got a Forever Yours. The children remember their parents would always take a bite of everyone's; Ida would say, "Oh give me just a bite" or ask for a "zip" of their drinks.

Ida lost her beloved husband Gerritt on October 31, 1976. After being dependant on him for so many years, Ida had to learn to be more independent, including getting around on her own. She was in her 50s when she learned to drive, and dating again was never an option. Her mind was sharp as a whip and she had an incredible memory for dates, birthdays and such. Ida may not have been about hugs and kisses, but she was there for anyone at anytime. She left her kids with many great memories, but more importantly, she left them with the unforgettable example of what a good mother and grandmother can be. She will be greatly missed.
