Aaro A. "Whitey" Aho, 80, of Coventry. Beloved husband of Frances (Laivo) Aho, died Monday, (February 12, 2001) at Windham Memorial Hospital. Whitey was born Feb. 4, 1921, in New Haven, son of the late Peter and Hilda (Kallioinen) Aho, and was a resident of Coventry for 51 years. Whitey was a World War II Army-Air Corp Veteran tech sgt. stationed in the Philippines and part of the Occupation Forces for Japan. Served in the 600th Engineer Squadron 384th Service Group and was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal Japan, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Service Star. Whitey was involved in the Coventry Community in many volunteering position. He was a charter member and president of the church congregation at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. A 4-H forester leader active with the Boy Scouts, member of the North Coventry Fire Dept., member of Zoning Board of Appeals, and Conservation Committee of Coventry. Besides his wife Frances of 53 years, Whitey is survived by a son, Alan C. Aho of New York City, NY; daughter, Sandra C. Aho of Coventry; and many friends. A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 17, 11 a.m. at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 10 North River Rd., with the Rev. Philip Secker officiating. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, Coventry. Calling hours will be Friday, February 16, 2-5 p.m. at the Coventry Funeral Home, 2665 Boston Tpke., (Rt. 44) Coventry. Memorial contributions may be made in Whitey's name to Prince of Peace Church building fund, 10 North River Rd., Coventry, CT 06238.
