Eugene K. Albracht, 89, died on March 21, 2010, at 10:45 p.m. He was born Sept. 5, 1920, in St. Bernard, Neb., to Joseph and Josephine (Korth) Albracht. He attended Catholic schools, receiving most of his education in Nebraska. He joined the Air Force in February 1942; he received his training in Paine Field, Wash., and Tucson, Ariz., was in 308th Bomb Group and was sent overseas to China, Burma and India in 1943 with 14th Army Air Force, as a staff sergeant. Eugene was discharged December 1945.
Eugene married Mary Vonada — they later divorced. In April 1966, he married Genevieve (Best) Nelson in Helena. Eugene worked for a number of years for Clover Leaf Dairy and worked for School District No. 1 Helena as clerk and manager for the school warehouse. He retired in 1984 due to a back injury.
Eugene is survived by his daughter, Carol Jean (Albracht) Sharon; grandson, Alan Cosand and his wife, Tammy; granddaughter, Patti Jo Chesterfield; great-granddaughter, Jennifer; three great-great-grandchildren; stepdaughter, Maddie Jette; two stepsons, Wayne and Bob Lea; sister, Patty Reikofski; several nieces and nephews in Nebraska and around the United States; and also by a special granddaughter, Debbie, and her husband, Gary Roope, who helped and cared for us in the last several years of our lives, especially their grandma and grandpa.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, seven sisters and his two sons, Frank and Kenneth, along with his wife of 41 years, Genevieve (Jenny) Albracht.
Viewing at Retz Funeral Home will be from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 28. A rosary vigil service will take place at 7 p.m. at the funeral home on Sunday, March 28. A funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral of St. Helena on Monday, March 29, at noon Retz Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
Burial with military honors will follow the service at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison with his wife. Those wishing memorials can send them to Memorial Fund at the Cathedral of St. Helena.
