He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a technician 5th grade from March 1942 to October 1945, as a tank commander.
He worked several local ranches, packed for the N.M. Game and fish and fought fires for the USFS.
He retired from Kennecott Copper where he worked as a shovel runner.
Richard was a consummate outdoors-man. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping in the local mountains and wilderness.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Herman Keene; his wife, Virgie Gertryde (Evans) Catlin-Jonas; and three brothers, Benjamin Franklin, Archie and Clyde Keene.
Richard is survived by his two sons, Richard Keene (wife Kathleen) of Deming, and Frank Keene (wife Jody) of Mesa; and his sister, Marie Keene of Anaheim, CA; Sandy Oaks (husband Jim), Cole Gatlin (wife June) and Leona Brown (husband Duane) all of Cliff; and Homer Lee Evans (wife Patsy) of Deming, who he raised as his children; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Casket bearers were: Don and Dan Gatlin, Quintin Karr, Cole Harsh, Clayton Seebeck, and Dale Brown.
Honorary bearers listed were: Leon Evans, Trent Nicholson, Leo Payne, Shawn Waldrip, Duane Brown, Clint Evans, Lester Evans, Bill Evans, Guy Evans, and Justin Karr.
