SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Monday in Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia, with the Rev. Darin Elvemo officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the East Pike Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Virginia Color Guard. Arrangements are by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert.

Charles William "Bill'' Aronen, 93, of Virginia died Friday, May 9, 2008 in the Virginia Convalescent Center.

He was born Jan. 28, 1915 in Ely to Jacob and Senja (Luomamaki) Aronen. He was a graduate of Ely High School and later worked in the Soudan Underground Mine and for the Civilian Conservation Corps. On Oct. 4, 1941 he married Pearl Salo in Virginia.

Bill served the country during World War II as an Army veteran, and following his military service he managed the Pike-Sandy Co-op. He owned and operated Crossroads and later co-owned Arrow Auto with his brother, Hugo. He also co-owned and managed the Plaza Bowl in Virginia.

Bill and Pearl enjoyed their retirement wintering in Florida and spending summers on Lake Vermilion. Bill loved Lake Vermilion, which was the gathering places for family and friends.

He was a member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church, Virginia American Legion Post 239 and the Virginia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He also served on the board of the Virginia Co-op Credit Union and the Chamber of Commerce. Bill was a former member of the Kiwanis, Elks and Optimists organizations.

He will be deeply missed by his devoted wife, Pearl; daughters, Sue (Mike) Blaeser of Virginia, Evelyn (Don) Ferguson of Gallatin, Tenn., and Lee (Terry) Croteau of Lake Vermilion; grandchildren, Kelly (Hugh) Bonner, Michele (Jim) Frazee, Carol Anne (Erik) Peterson, Paul Blaeser, Theresa (Dave) Patchen, Becky (Chad) Pearson, Donny (Melissa) Ferguson, Jason (Holly) Croteau and Tara Lee Croteau; 20 great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert (Doris) Aronen of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Walter (Rosemary) Aronen of Angola, Ind.; sister, Rachel (Ray) Avikainen, of Pike; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Peggy Ann; grandson, Eric Croteau; brothers, Larry, John and Hugo; and sisters, Myrtle Koski and Irma Renaudo.
