Born and raised near the coal-mining town of Portage, PA, Margaret Supina, the daughter of Rusyn immigrants, graduated from Mercy Hospital nursing school in Altoona, PA, becoming a Registered Nurse in 1935. She worked for several years as a private duty nurse before becoming a Red Cross nurse in 1942. Soon after she joined the US Army Nurse Corps and was sent overseas as an R.N. in the 51st Station Hospital, arriving in North Africa on Christmas Eve, 1942. From 1942 to 1945 she served with the 51st Station Hospital throughout North Africa, Italy and France.

At the end of World War II, she returned and married Kermit L Ray, whom she met in her hospital unit, on 6 Dec 1945 in Greenville, IL.
