Kermit was a schoolteacher in a one-room school house (old Root School) for six years before entering military service in 1941.
He completed basic training at Ft. Sheridan, IL from June - Oct 1941 before returning to Sorento. After the attack on Pearl Harbor he returned to service in Feb 1942 and served with the 51st Station Hospital as its First Sergeant. His hospital unit arrived in North Africa on Christmas Eve, 1942. The unit served throughout North Africa, Italy and France until 1945.
After the war, he returned to Illinois and married Margaret Supina, a Registered Nurse whom he met in his hospital unit. They came to Litchfield, IL where they remained throughout their lives.
Kermit first worked for the American Radiator Co as a clerk, then for the U.S. Postal Service. He retired from the Postal Service after 32 years where he eventually served as the assistant Postmaster at Litchfield.
