He was a boatman with Co D of the 28th PA Inf enlisting on June 6, 1861 and mustered in a month later. He was reported a deserter at Dumfried, VA on Feb 5, 1863. Dumfried was a major port for suppling the Union Army's campaign in Virginia during the winter of 1862-63. The promise of victory turned into a disasterous defeat at Fredricsburg in which the famed Irish Brigade suffered nearly 85% casualties (ironically assualting Irish units of the Confederate Army) Perhaps disheartened by the poor leadership he left his unit having served 31 months of a 36 month enlistment. [Both North & South had Irish revolutionaries in their ranks gaining military experience for their battle for indeoendence from England] The Union used the Irish unit as a subtile reminder that entering the war on the Confederacy's side may stir up discontent in Ireland. Francis left the battlefield before the unit staarted chasing Lee North to Gettysburg.
