Chester died by drowning. He and Frank Hooper had been trying to cross Allen Pond in a boat that was little more than a shell, and known to be unsafe. The boat was found washed up on an island, with their hats in the boat. Days past before the bodies were recovered. Cannon fire was used to try to bring the bodies to the surface. However by grappling the bodies were found in 40 feet of water.
It appears that Chester and his parents were originally buried at the Additon cemetery in South Leeds. as their names were included in an early transcription of that cemetery. At some point they were reinterred to Greene.
