Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the Union Army in Company G, 104th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 31, 1862 at Fair Oaks, Virginia. His citation reads "While carrying the regimental colors on the retreat he returned to face the advancing enemy, flag in hand, and saved the other color, which would otherwise have been captured."
