Cambria; Ruby Douma, age 74, died peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the UW Hospital in Madison following a quiet yet courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. from the First Randolph Christian Reformed Church, N8879 E. Friesland Rd., with Rev. Kenneth Prol officiating. Burial will follow in the Friesland Cemetery. The Douma family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday evening, May 21, 2014 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the church and also on Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Ruby was born on July 8, 1939 in Portage, WI the daughter of Dewey and Ruth (Williams) Kempenaar. She attended East Friesland Elementary School, the Cambria High School and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1957. Ruby then furthered her education at Columbia Hospital of Nursing in Milwaukee.

Ruby was united in marriage to Peter Douma on November 21, 1958 on the Douma family homestead. Together as a team, they raised a family while she worked part-time as a nurse's aide and also as a dental assistant. In 1973 they purchased and worked side by side on the Douma family farm. They left the family farm in 1998 and moved into the home they built together by hand.

Ruby was a past member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Sheboygan, a current member of First Randolph Christian Reformed Church, a member of Martha's Circle and sang in the church choir. She will always be remembered as a woman who was a hard worker and great homemaker. She loved gardening, canning, sewing, restoring furniture, cross stitching and made banners for the church.

Ruby will be sadly missed and mourned by her husband, Peter Douma of rural Cambria.


Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, her son Scott in 1988, a brother Darvin Kempenaar, her mother and father-in-law, Dewey R. (Agnes) Douma, brother-in-law, Kenneth Whitmore; two nephews, Virgil Kempenaar II and Troy Whitmore and a great nephew, Christopher Whitmore.
