Ray Manahan was born in 1916, the last of six children from his father's first marriage. His mother died when he was three and his father remarried a few years later. The second marriage produced two more children, one of which,and David V. Manahan also was elected Mayor of Morristown. Born in Dunellen in Middlesex County, Manahan attended the local high school. He went to Villanova University to study economics, specializing in banking and investment. Manahan then went on to graduate school at NYU and attended Fordham Law School before beginning work in the Treasury office of the Metropolitan Insurance Company in New York City. He married the former Mary I. McNeil of Bradley Beach in 1940. The couple had 6 children, twin boys and four girls.

In 1971 Gertrude Earls married J. Raymond Manahan, former five term mayor of the Town of Morristown, N.J. They lived in Mendham, N.J. before returning to Morristown in 1987. Their love of visiting Vermont induced them to move to Manchester Center in 2002. Raymond predeceased her on November 27, 2004.
