Pvt. Albert C. Burgess
C. S. A., 42nd Georgia Infantry, Company D
Albert Burgess enlisted in the C.S.A., 42nd Georgia Infantry, Company D on March 4, 1862, the same day as his brother, Henry. Albert was captured on July 4, 1863 at Vicksburg and paroled on July 6. He fought along side Henry thru the battles around Atlanta and into Tennessee. On September 20, 1864, he was captured near Nashville, Tennessee. He was sent to a prison in Louisville, Kentucky where he remained until October 29, 1864. He was then moved to Camp Douglas Prison in Chicago, Illinois where he was held until the war ended. He was discharged at Camp Douglas on June 30, 1865.

Conditions at Camp Douglas
From TheAmericanCivilWar.com: More than 7,000 prisoners were in the camp by September, 1863. Disease, hunger, poor sanitation, lack of adequate clothing, and miserably cold weather were endured by the men incarcerated there. By the end of 1863, epidemics of smallpox were emerging at the camp.

The commandant and his subordinates reduced the quality/quantity of prisoner rations for personal profits. After the retaliatory measures were adopted, the stoves were taken away and all vegetables were cut off from the rations. With the elimination of the vegetables, scurvy occurred in epidemic numbers, followed by another smallpox epidemic. Because of the drastic prison conditions, local residents offered relief and assistance to the prisoners, not as a matter of politics but purely out of compassion. Worst of all was the lack of stoves in the prisoner's barracks. In late 1864, many political prisoners from the surrounding counties were added to the camp upon the discovery of several plots to release prisoners. By then, the camp had a prisoner population of 12,082.
