Lauryn Dickens, 9 months, was reported missing by her mother, Shakara Dickens on September 15, 2010. She told police that she gave the child to an unknown woman on September 7, 2010 who arrived at her apartment unannounced at the request of the child's jailed father. She had told police that she had told the father that she could no longer care for Lauryn then he sent the woman to take Lauryn.
However police found that not to be true because the father had not spoken with the mother since late August. Also, calls from the jail to her phone had been permanently blocked. Police searched the home with a cadaver dog where it detected human decomposition but the whereabouts of Lauryn are unknown but she is presumed dead. They took several items from the home such as two cell phones, a baby car seat, a baby jumper, a white shirt, and a pink and white Winnie the Pooh blanket.
On September 21, 2010 Shakara Dickens was indicted for murder with aggravated child abuse and with false reporting. She remains in Shelby County Jail.
UPDATE: In March 2012 Shakara Dickens was found guilty of second degree murder in the death of her daughter. She admitted she killed Lauryn after she smothered her with her hands all because she would not stop crying. She could not find a babysitter for Lauryn on September 7 which made her upset and she said Lauryn saw her crying which made her start to cry.
She did not stop crying so she smothered her until she went limp. She then wrapped her daughter in a towel and put her in a garbage bag and then put her in a near by dumpster. She then saw the dumpster being emptied out just days later around 4 am
