Mr. Jessie James Mercer, 78, of Hortense died early Sunday morning (Apr.23, 2006) in the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup after a long illness.

A native of Gordon Alabama he was the son of Homer Lee and Nettie Hamilton Mercer. A member of the Nahunta First Baptist Church, Mr. Mercer was an avid reader he worked as a carpenter and ran his own business. A World War II veteran he served his Country in the U.S. Army.

Proceeded in death by 2-daughters, Susan Gail Mercer and Kim Guinn, a sister, Edna Lloyd, a brother, Fauline Mercer, and his first wife, Gloria Mercer.

Survived by his wife of 28 years, Ruby Carolyn Ingle Mercer, of Hortense, 8-children, Kathy Watts (Bill), of Callahan, FL, Carolyn Townsend (Michael), of Kingsland, GA, Susan Altman (Gary), of Hoboken, GA, Denise McQuaig (Jack), Joyce Moore (Michael) both of Nahunta, GA, Ronald Gordon (Lynn), of Callahan, FL, Shelton Mercer (Jeanette) of Hortense, GA and Joe Guinn, of Tampa, FL, 18-grandchildren, Bill Watts (Wendy), Jamie Watts and Sean Watts, all of Jacksonville, FL, Tracie Penunuri (Jimmy), of Utah, Joyce Clark, Austin, TX, Barry Henderson, of Arkansas, Kimberly and Gloria Marcum of Kingsland, GA,Riley Altman, of Hoboken, Teresa Thrift (David), of Hoboken, Steve Guinn (Sabrina) of Offerman, GA, Stanley Guinn (Wendy), Michael Moore (Christy) and Roger Moore (Amanda) all of Nahunta, GA, Ronald Gordon (Pamela), of Fernandina Beach, FL, Wendy Gordon, of Callahan, FL, Wendy Guinn (Stanley), of Nahunta, and Jason Nowling of Germany, 15-Great-Grandchildren, 1-sister, Elma Hand (Edward), of Jacksonville, FL, 2-brothers, Frank Mercer, of Hortense and Willard Mercer (Charlene) of Middleburg, FL, also several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Visitation will be held Tuesday evening starting at 6PM from Chambless-Frye Funeral Home in Nahunta, GA.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning (Apr. 26, 2006) at 11AM from the Nahunta First Baptist Church with Bishop Hugh Arnold, Dr. W. Derrell Rentz and Rev. Leonard Owens officiating.

Burial will be at 3PM in the Dinsmore Community Cemetery, in Dinsmore, FL. with military honors.

Pallbearers will be Bill and Sean Watts, Victor Mercer, Eddie Hand, Jack, Wayne, and Carl Lloyd, and Stanley Guinn.
