He was born September 7, 1929, in Union County, Missouri , the son of Otto and Permelia Althage. James was a veteran of the United States Army and then served as deputy sheriff and sheriff for a combined 23 years at the Franklin County, Missouri Sheriff's Office. He loved to travel and was an award winning square dancer. James was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Althage; a brother, Caroll Althage and a sister, Gladys Arnold.
Survivors include three sons and a daughter-in-law, Kevin, Kraig and Kurt and Janell Althage all of Washington, Missouri; two step-daughters, Aletha Stacy of Brockwell and Gayle Brackett of Pleasant Plains, Arkansas; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Althage of Washington , Missouri and three grandsons, Tyler, Jacob and Ross Althage all of Washington, Missouri.
Burial will be in the Combs Cemetery.
