Lena Marie Schwisow was the 3rd of 13 children born to Chris and Minnie (Niederkleine) Schwisow, both German immigrants who had come to America in 1887. She was baptized in the Zion Lutheran Church as an infant.

Zion Lutheran Church was the scene of a double wedding ceremony on February 16, 1919: Lena married Otto John Bartels, and her older sister Louise married Jess Gutzmer.

Lena and Otto settled into farming in Saline County, and raised seven children: Vernon, Everett, Leona, Gaylord, Dorothy, Willard, and Donna. Lena and Otto celebrated fifty years of marriage before his passing in 1970.
