The son of Carl Doerr Hubert and Mildred Elizabeth Wells, he served with G Company, 5th Marine Regiment, 3rd Battalion in Korea. His unit was attached to the 1st Battalion in October and November 1952. They were set up on the de facto border between North and South Korea, just south of the DMZ. Billy was killed and another Marine from his unit wounded during a ten-minute period of heavy shelling from 2130 to 2140.

Edward Lock, a classmate and fellow Marine and Korean War veteran, left the following remembrance about Billy on koreanwar.org: "I grew up with him, went to school with him, and followed him into the Marine Corps in 1952. I last saw Billy when he visited me in Marine Boot Camp at San Diego, Ca, just before he went to Korea. He brought me a coke and candy bar when he visited me in boot camp, registering as my brother to get to visit with me."
