Mr. Excell was born in Panguitch, December 16, 1884, the son of Henry and Elizabeth Austin Excell. He spent his early boyhood attending the local elementary school and has followed the professions of brick and rock mason, plasterer and farmer.
On July 3, 1905, he was married to Ann Marie Henrie and ten children were born to the union, two of whom have preceeded their father in death.
He was an active member of the LDS church and served in many capacities. He served some 20 years in the Sunday School presidency of the Panguitch stake, has held offices in the stake priesthood organization and has been a teacher in the Sunday Schools. He served a two year mission in the Central States and has been on several short-term missions for the church. He has served as chairmain of the stake genealogical organization and has spent much time doing temple work.
He has served as president of the Old Ditch and Long Canal Irrigation companies and was a member of the board of each organization at the time of his death. He was a member of the county farm debt adjustment committee and has furnished much crop information to the Agricultural Adjustment administration. He was president of the local organization at the time of his death.
Survivors besides the sorrowing widow, Mrs. Ane Henrie Excell, include three sons, James Henry, Earl and Don G. Excell, and give daughters, Mrs. Levi Myers, Mrs. Alton Talbot, Mrs. Gean Sevy, Mrs. Elsa Talbot and Marie Excell, all of Panguitch. Other survivors are four sisters, Mrs. Nellie Riding, Mrs. Mabel Hatch, and Mae Dodds of Panguitch and Mrs. Minnie Syrett of Ruby's Inn, and two brothers, John and Dewey Excell of Springdale. Sixteen grandchildren also survive. One daughter, Irene Excell, was killed in an auto accident in February, 1938, and one son Ballard was killed in a swimming accident in July of last year.
