Mary Esther Gardner Capps was the eighth of ten children born to Thomas Gardner and his wife Mary Norton. Her father was a successful tanner and dealer in animal hides in the bayou town of Washington, St. Landry Parish, La. Mary married on June 20, 1852 James Allen Capps (1825-1870), a riverboat captain. James and Mary Capps made their home in Washington, where they raised nine children: Mary Ann Page (b. 1853), John Davis (b. 1855), Lucy (b. 1856), Aline Emily (b. 1858), Orramel Hinckley (b. 1860), James Allen, Jr. (b. 1861), Thomas Gardner (b. ca. 1864), Charles (b. ca. 1866), and Mattie (b. 1867).

DIED—At Washington, on the 22d inst., Mrs. MARY GARDNER, consort of Capt. Jas. A. Capps, aged 38 years.

James Capps followed less than two years later. The orphaned Capps children were taken in by their aunts and uncles.
