US Congressman. He graduated from the law department of the Louisiana State University in 1861 and during the Civil War served as a Captain in the 16th Regiment, Louisiana Infantry, was captured, held as a prisoner at Johnson’s Island in Lake Erie, until the end of the war. After the war, he was admitted to the bar in 1866, commenced to practice law in Covington, Louisiana and was a member of the Louisiana State Senate, (1866-70). In 1875, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1885. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 48.
