U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the law department of Columbia College, New York City, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Charleston, South Carolina. Moving to Louisiana in 1830, he was district attorney for New Orleans and a member of the Louisiana State House of Representatives (1837-53). In 1853 he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third Congress, serving until 1855. After leaving Congress, he was the judge of the first Louisiana district court of New Orleans in 1859. During the Civil War, he was the Colonel of the 5th Louisiana Infantry, Confederate Army and later was a Brigadier General in the Louisiana Militia.
