It was thought that the danger had passed when she suffered a relapse and died at St. Joseph's hospital in St. Paul.
In 1933 John was helping his son Joseph, along with his grandson Erwin Steinhoff, cutting down trees for firewood. they had cut down this large tree but the branches were propping it up a few feet from the ground. It was in the casual work of chopping away some of these supporting limbs that the tree lurched and caught Joseph as it fell the short distance to the ground. His father John saw the horrible accident. The heavy tree was instantly removed by using hand spikes, but the weight of the heavy tree trunk had crushed Joseph's head and he had died instantly, leaving a wife ane 7 small children ranging in the age of 8 years to 6 weeks After the accident John, his wife already dead fro 13 years, went to live with his daughter-in - law and her family. He had completely retired from farming at the time of his death at his daughter-in -laws home, Mrs. Joseph Wolf.
