age 51 years 2 months 19 days (stone is broken & is near back of cemetery near lilac tree)
Written by his grandson, William R. "Bill" Gutzka. Added 16 October 2020.
Henry Wolfe, my maternal grandfather, died in Elmwood Ontario on 11/21/1906
after contracting typhoid fever. Elmwood is located five miles due north of Hanover
and about 25 miles south of Owen Sound, a port city on Georgian Bay. I visited
Elmwood for the first time in October of 1997 after stopping at the Hanover Public
Library and checking out the genealogy room. There I quickly found exactly where
his grave was located in the Elmwood Cemetery. Next I found his obituary on the
front page of the 11/29/06 edition of The Hanover Post, a weekly newspaper that
included news from towns and villages in the Hanover area. It was on microfiche
so I had a full page copy made and framed it when I got home. I might not have
bothered to frame it except I loved the style of the era in which it was written and
because it contained such a wealth of information about the Wolfe family that I
had been searching for.
In fact, this is the kind of obituary genealogists dream of finding! Rich in details
about the deceased and his family. The only thing it lacked was mentioning
the names of Henry’s or his wife Mary’s parents. It took me more than 15 years
before I finally ran across an entry for Henry’s and Mary’s marriage in the
Grey County marriage records. I had previously overlooked that entry because
it was listed under “Wolf” rather than “Wolfe”. When I opened it on a whim one
day I nearly fell out of my chair when I realized it was actually the listing for
Henry and Mary’s marriage. And included therein were the long sought after
names of both sets of my great grandparents. Eureka!

Here is Henry’s obit as it appeared in the Post…

The grim reaper, death, visited our town
last Wednesday, claiming Mr. Henry Wolfe
who was sick with typhoid fever for five
weeks. He was apparently getting along
nicely but in twenty four hours passed
over the River Jordan, from whence no
mortal returns. Deceased was born in
Waterloo County, Ont. near Doon Sept 2nd
1856 on the old homestead where his oldest
brother George still resides. He was married
In 1878 to Mary Pfeffer of Carrick Township
and the same year moved to Brant between
here and Chesley on a farm for three years,
thence to Elmwood where he lived up to his
death. He leaves to mourn, his sorrowing
widow and ten children: Albert of this town,
Mrs. C. Raymond, Adeline and Clara of Detroit.
Mabel is still in bed with the fever, and all the
rest are at home. The youngest is about four
years old. The funeral took place on Friday
afternoon to the Elmwood cemetery, all
the children being present. Rev. C. Miller
of the new Mennonite church and Rev.
Alex Leslie of the Presbyterian church
officiated. From a distance were present
John Wolfe and wife of Waterloo, Fred Wolfe
Waterloo County and Mrs. Wm. Thoms only
sister of Doon. Owing to unavoidable
circumstances Paul, George and Michael
Wolfe could not attend. Deceased was a
member of the C.O.F. and belonged to the
Elmwood Lodge. About fifty members marched
from the residence to the cemetery and in
accordance with the rules of the order performed the
ceremonies at the grave forming a large circle and each
member deposited an evergreen on to the casket.
A large concourse of people attended. We extend
our sympathy to the bereaved family. Deceased was a
brother-in-law of Henry Glauser of this place.
