Joseph Harper Rogers was born in Tompkins, New York to Harper and Polly (Guernsey) Rogers and married to Adelia E (maiden name unknown); they had four children Harper L, Virgil E, William L and Cora Bella.

Joseph served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was in Company A, New York 144th Infantry Regiment. He suffered from Typhoid Fever during his tenure as a soldier.

In the 1870 census he was a farmer and then in the 1880 census he was a shoemaker. In both census he was living with his mother with his brother-in-law John Axtell so assume sadly that he was separated from his wife.
