James Alfred Young was born September 15, 1931 to Herman E. and Lura May (Hixson) Young near the small town of Echo in Umatilla County, Oregon. He was the oldest of three children born to Herman and Lura. Both of his parents had been married previously so James also had six older half brothers and sisters.
His father died when James was 8 years old and his mother, Lura, was left to raise the children.
James married Frances O. Klitzke June 4, 1960 in Lane County, Oregon. Together, the couple had four children - three girls and a boy.
James died at the age of 44 on January 4, 1975. He is buried in Lane Memorial Gardens in Eugene, Oregon
