13 Sept 1878 Fri

"We regret to announce the death of Mrs. Susan Pickens Calhoun, widow of the late Hon. James M. Calhoun and dauther of Gov Andrew Pickens, of South Carolina. She died very suddenly on Saturday evening the 7th inst., at her home, near Richmond, in this county, in the seventy-first year of her age. Her husband died in November 1877.

Mrs. Calhoun was a lady of excellent sense, and was noted for her kindness and charity. For a number of years she had been a devout and consistent member of the Presbyterian church. She leaves a large and devoted family of children and grandchildren to imitate her example, and to mourn her loss.

She filled wisely and well the relations of mother, wife and friend, and discharged cheerfully and unostentatiously the duties she owed to society.

Her death is lamented by the entire community in which she lived for nearly forty years, universally loved and respected."
