Harrison came with his family to Appanoose County, Iowa, from Miami County, Ohio, in 1852, when he was 15 years old. He enlisted in Company G, 36th Iowa Infantry on 19 Aug 1862 for a period of three years. He was captured at Marks Mills, Arkansas, and spent the rest of the war in prison in Tyler, Texas. His brother-in-law, James Lowrey, was in the same company.
