The Rev. Jacob Baylis, one of the oldest and most respected residents of the Town of Huntington, passed from this life to the Eternal Home, Friday, August 18, after an illness of about two weeks. Mr. Baylis was born at Melville, November 14, 1831, but spent nearly all his life in Half Hollows, following the occupation of a farmer. He was converted in early years, and became an earnest member of the Melville M.E. Church, as well as a local preacher, ever ready to assist in churches or schoolhouses where meetings were often held in olden times. On November 7, 1855, he married Phebe, daughter of Ezra Ketcham and Mary Mott, and after 32 years of life together she passed away. Six children were born to them, but only two survive. They are Mary, the wife of Frank B. Whitson, of Syosset, and Adah, the wife of Charles E. Titus, of Half Hollows. Nearly 28 years ago he married Ann Eliza Oakley, then the widow of Isaac H. Ketcham, of Melville. She survives him, as do eight grandchildren, who are; John S. Baylis, of Farmingdale; Ezra Whitson, of Marlboro, NJ; Mrs. Louis Piquet, of Woodbury; Whitney and Lindsay Whitson, of Syosset; Marie, Alfred & Kenneth Titus, of Half Hollows; and five great grandchildren. The funeral services were largely attended at his late residence, Monday at 2 P.M., and were conducted by the Rev. G. Laass, pastor of the Melville M.E. Church, who was assisted by the Rev. S.A. Sands, of Woodmere and the Rev. B.F. Gilman, of Amityville. Six of the grandsons acted as pallbearers. The internment was at Melville.
