J. T. was the oldest child of John Augustus and Gertrude [Tiller] Maddux. He married Mary Clytee Buster on 21 August 1934, in Post, Texas. They had five children: John Howard; Myrta Clytee; Melba Janice; Jay Thomas, Jr.; and Barbara Joy Maddux.
