From F.A.G. Member #47415946 Jean Suddarth:

John Liles appears to be the son of Jesse Liles (Lyles) of Union County, South Carolina. In 1819 John sells land which was part of a tract which was originally granted to John Lyles Sr. and "fell into the hand" of his son Jesse and was conveyed by him to John Liles. The question that needs to be answered is whether this John Lyles (Liles) Sr. was Col. John Liles as so many believe. Jesse was married to a Mildred who was not Amelia Rountree nor was she Mildred Rountree, the daughter of Richardson Rountree. Further research needs to be conducted to discover whether she might fit elsewhere in the Rountree line.

Susanna (Belue) Lyles died in 1816 in Union Co., SC. In her will, she calls Jesse Lyles her son. It is thought that John Lyles Sr. was previously married and the eldest two children may be from that marriage. Jesse being the oldest could be her step-son as they often called step-children their son or daughter.

To complicate matters even more, both the descendants of Col. John Liles and those of Susanna (Belue) Lyles claim relationship to Jesse, however, records for Jesse appear in the Fair Forest area of Union Co. while Col. John's records appear in Newberry and Fairfield Counties. Most of the Col. John Liles information comes from books which were written years ago without sources. There are numerous Lyles/Liles/Lisles families in South Carolina and it will take much diligent research to sort them out.
