Leonard Leo Storms, 91, of Winner, SD, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at his residence in Winner, SD. Leonard (Leo) W. Storms, age 91, peacefully passed to our Lord on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at his home.
He was born to Leonard Arnold Storms and Mabel Florence (Johnson) Storms on Jan 16, 1917 on their farm near Clearfield, SD. After grade school Leo helped on the family farm and later attended Auto Diesel School in Fargo, ND. He then returned to help on the farm and work at the Clearfield garage.
In 1943 he moved to Winner and worked as a tractor mechanic for International Harvester. Leo married Ruth Elaine Nelson in 1947 and moved to a small farm west of Winner. To this union, five children were born. Three sons: Linus Wayne, John (Jack) Leonard, and Paul Edward and two daughters: Myra Jean and Nancy Lee.
First God, then family, and lastly work was how Leo prioritized his life. His family was raised with the same beliefs. With his family growing, Leo was assisted by many good neighbors to pour a foundation for a new house which he completed in 1956. Leo did all of the other work himself including the plumbing, electrical and cabinetry.
Along with the farm work, Leo continued doing tractor mechanics for the previous customers that followed him. The Storms Repair Mechanic shop grew requiring him to build a larger shop. His two sons, Jack and Paul, later joined him in the business. Leo was then able to continue living on the farm and doing his hobbies of working with wood and iron.
Leo loved restoring the wood on old plows and wagon wheels and making things out of iron, which included: hand railings, spiral stair cases, a 9 foot Episcopalian Niobrara cross for the Mission cemetery, and a tractor splitting stand that he patented and sold.
Leo is survived by two sons: Jack (Ellen) Storms of Winner, SD; Paul (Ellen Moss) Storms of Winner, SD and by two daughters: Myra Christensen of Pierre, SD; Nancy (Brian) Walsh of Cassville, Mo.: 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren: Sisters Mamie Crane of Eugene, OR; Mary (Martin) Jorgenson, Cecilia (Raymond) Kartak, Emerald Diez all of Winner, SD. Preceding him in death are his son Linus, his parents, and his siblings: Clara Frank, Genevieve Fast, and Donald Storms.
